grandfather file

A magnetic tape or disk containing basic information used on a second file, and this second file is updated according to the latest transactions or changes. When this second file is copied, it becomes the new grandfather file, and a series of grandfather files is the historical record or statistical base for further manipulation, analysis, or an audit trail. They are also backup files in case of accidental erasure or loss of current files.
