1. In recording, the blank portion of a magnetic tape which separates two tracks of information, thus preventing signal interference.

2. In communications, a narrow band of unused frequencies between allocated channels, intended to minimize the possibility of mutual interference. For example, most television channels have a guard band of 0.5 MHz on each side of the channel.
