In telegraphy, an early code in which the characters are formed from signal elements called dots and dashes. Ideally, the dash has a duration of three dots, and the elements making up a character are separated by spaces with a duration of one dot. The spacing between characters is equivalent to the length of a dash, that between words to the length of two dashes.
