high layer functions

Functions in layers 4 to 7 of the open systems interconnection (OSI) protocol reference model. They usually relate to information storage, processing or message facilities. Capabilities necessary to support these functions are normally provided within the user terminals, but the network may contain the physical entities necessary to provide the functions.
